Background of the study

Urban redevelopment initiatives aim to revitalize cityscapes by improving infrastructure, public spaces, and economic opportunities. In Abuja, redevelopment projects are transforming neighborhoods, impacting both the physical environment and the social fabric of communities. These changes can lead to improved living standards and economic growth; however, they also risk altering or eroding longstanding neighborhood identities and cultural heritage (Ibrahim, 2023). Residents often have deep emotional and historical ties to their neighborhoods, which are expressed through local traditions, social networks, and community landmarks. Urban redevelopment, while necessary for modernization, may disrupt these connections, leading to feelings of alienation and loss of identity among long-time residents. This study evaluates the effects of urban redevelopment on neighborhood identity in Abuja, exploring how changes in the built environment and community dynamics influence residents' sense of belonging and cultural continuity. The research examines both positive outcomes, such as enhanced amenities and economic opportunities, and negative impacts, such as displacement and cultural dilution, to provide a balanced perspective on urban transformation.

Statement of the problem

Urban redevelopment in Abuja, while beneficial for economic and infrastructural growth, often leads to the unintended consequence of diminishing neighborhood identity. The displacement of long-established communities and the homogenization of urban spaces erode cultural diversity and weaken social cohesion. Residents may experience a loss of community heritage, resulting in reduced local engagement and identity fragmentation. This study seeks to critically assess these issues and identify measures to mitigate the adverse effects of redevelopment on neighborhood identity.

Objectives of the Study
